Summer Magic at Old Warden

Ah, beautiful Old Warden Aerodrome. Nestled in the middle of Bedfordshire’s fields and farms sits the grass airstrip, home to the wonderful Shuttleworth Collection and its eclectic fleet of historic aircraft.

Walking into the showground, you’re met with an atmosphere like nowhere else. Show days see a variety of classic aircraft parked immediately in front of the crowdline, with period‑appropriate tractors and cars pootling along in support of the flying assets. The showground mirrors the vintage feel with a charming classic funfair and rides on a vintage bus.

In 2025, this unique atmosphere was paired with stunning weather for the Summer Air Show, creating one of the most enjoyable aviation events of the year. The organisers clearly made a conscious effort to secure an eclectic selection of types that would look fantastic in the lush Old Warden setting. The star for many was the participation of the French‑based MD.312 Flamant from Amicale des Avions Anciens d'Albert, which performed a short pairs routine with the resident C19 Anson before a solo display that looked particularly striking in the Saturday evening light.

Two European‑based highlights came in the form of the F4U‑5NL Corsair from Flying Legends in Germany, while the Belgian‑based CA‑13 Boomerang made the type’s UK mainland appearance. R4D Ready 4 Duty was yet another standout, with the Commemorative Air Force’s aircraft participating in a four‑month tour of the UK and Europe to coincide with the 80th anniversary of VE Day.

While Shuttleworth shows are predominantly oriented around vintage aviation, it’s always a treat when modern military assets participate. The Saturday of the show saw the Red Arrows perform against a rich blue sky, their nine‑ship routine packing a huge amount of impact over the intimate, classic airfield.

Following the Summer Air Show, forums and social media were fast to praise the organisers for delivering such a wonderful and timeless event. The bar has certainly been raised for their 2026 events.
